A Weekend to Forget for A&M, but One to Remember for Alabama State

This Magic City Classic weekend was one for the books. Especially if you wear black and gold. Alabama State University supporters had a lot to celebrate, while fans of Alabama A&M were left shaking their heads after a weekend that could only be described as depressing.

It started off with some unexpected entertainment. During ESPN’s live coverage, an Alabama State flag football player made headlines and highlight reels by absolutely routing an Alabama A&M student in front of the cameras. The crowd’s reaction said it all, and the clip quickly made its way around social media.

If that wasn’t enough, A&M’s mascot added to the chaos, losing a 40-yard dash and almost his headpiece in the process. Cam Newton, no stranger to the spotlight, was caught in a brief altercation during the weekend’s festivities with Butch, Alabama A&M’s mascot. A viral clip that added even more buzz to an already unpredictable event.

It was also full of big wins for Alabama State. Not only did the Hornets take home the victory in the annual Magic City Classic football game, but their women’s cross-country team also outpaced A&M’s runners. The scoreboard, the bragging rights, the viral clip clearly leaned Montgomery’s way this year.

And then came the biggest score of all, off the field. Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott announced a $38 million donation to Alabama State University, one of the largest gifts in the school’s history. Congratulations to them. I will be remised to not add that Alabama State’s President Dr. Quinton T. Ross Jr. pledged a $10,000 donation to support Alabama A&M’s fundraising campaign honoring 150 years.

On Monday, Alabama A&M and UAH split the Mayor’s Cup in basketball, giving both schools something positive to hold onto as the city’s collegiate sports scene continues to grow in competition and camaraderie.

When all was said and done, this weekend was good to Alabama State. From viral moments to victories and even a multimillion-dollar donation, the Hornets are happy.

There are still four games left in the football season, and now is the time to rally behind our young men. Let’s bring that same energy and pride to finish the season strong, then carry that momentum into the offseason as we gear up for an exciting men’s and women’s basketball season ahead.

As always, Go Bulldogs.
